Welcome to another edition of the Doctor’s Note where we talk about what’s on our minds when it comes to your health.

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Chris Shade, a pioneer in detoxification science and the founder of Quicksilver Scientific. Our conversation dove deep into the evolution of detox therapy and the exciting frontier of peptide treatments for longevity, chronic illness, and general wellness. Dr. Shade shared his own journey—from being an organic farmer and environmental mercury researcher to developing advanced detoxification protocols that consider the body as an integrated system, rather than treating symptoms in isolation. We discussed not only the science behind removing toxins but also the practical, user-friendly innovations Quicksilver has brought to the field, particularly their liposomal and sublingual products that make detox and peptide therapies more accessible, effective, and easier to integrate into busy lives.

One highlight of our discussion was the importance of approaching detox not as a single intervention but as a system—from mobilizing toxins in tissue to binding them in the gut and supporting the critical liver-bile pathway for excretion. Dr. Shade emphasized the crucial overlap between detoxification, autophagy, and metabolic health, showing how inflammation, chronic infection, and even hormonal dysfunction can be powerfully affected by effective detox. We covered why simple protocols that open drainage pathways can prevent the harsh “Herxheimer” reactions many fear with rapid detox and why sublingual peptides like BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, and copper GHK are changing the game for healing, reducing inflammation, and supporting hormone health—without the risks and hassle of off-label injections.

PODCAST NOTES

  • Functional detox needs to be viewed as a carefully coordinated, multi-step process instead of just taking a one-off binder or doing a laxative cleanse. In order for your body to effectively clear toxins, you need to mobilize them from tissues (often aided by compounds like glutathione and NRF2 upregulators), shift them into the blood, move them through the liver, and excrete them into the GI tract. Only then do GI binders truly work effectively to capture and remove these toxins, making the whole system vastly more effective than isolated approaches.

  • A common reason people feel worse during detox is because their drainage pathways are blocked, leading to what’s known as Herxheimer or “die-off” reactions. Opening up kidney and liver function, supporting bile flow, and using high-grade binders can make detox not only safer but also more tolerable, so patients can go deeper into the process without experiencing overwhelming symptoms or setbacks.

  • Chronic infections—including Lyme disease, mold exposure, Epstein-Barr virus, and various other stealth microbes—create chronic inflammation and perpetuate toxic load in the body, making detoxification more challenging but also more important. Addressing infections and toxins together, using a blend of antimicrobials and ongoing detox support, offers a more complete and successful path to recovery for many patients with complex health histories.

  • The advent of sublingual peptide therapies like BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, and copper GHK has revolutionized the ease, safety, and efficacy of healing protocols. Unlike the old days of either complex injection regimens or questionable quality from gray-market sources, these peptides can now be delivered via advanced liposomal technology for high bioavailability and rapid action—helping patients recover from gut, ligament, and systemic inflammation without the risks associated with injections.

  • KPV, in particular, plays a uniquely powerful role not just in repairing the gut lining alongside BPC-157, but also in suppressing the excessive inflammatory cycles triggered by food sensitivities and immune reactions. Because it blocks the NF kappa B pathway, KPV ensures that once the gut is sealed, it stays sealed—protecting against repeated “leaky gut” episodes and the resulting inflammation systemically. It’s a critical element for anyone dealing with autoimmunity, recurrent infections, or hormone resistance.

  • When you integrate effective detoxification strategies with advanced peptide therapies, you’re setting the stage for much better outcomes, especially with hormone replacement and longevity protocols. Clearing inflammation and supporting receptor sensitivity can mean hormone therapies work better at lower doses and with fewer side effects, transforming quality of life, repair, and metabolic health for patients who may have been stuck or plateaued previously.

  • Low-dose GLP-1 medications, when supported by Quicksilver’s full toolkit (including the GLP-1 amplifier, bitters for bile flow, and appropriate binders), enable not just sustainable weight loss and blood sugar improvement, but also reduced side effects like nausea or toxin overload. By addressing both toxin mobilization and effective elimination, patients can realize all the metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits of GLP-1 agonists without the setbacks that come from moving toxins too quickly.

  • Compliance and real-world success hinge on simple, well-structured protocols that allow patients to “feel” the results quickly. The rapid absorption and action of sublingual and liposomal formulations mean that people notice improvements, which motivates continued use and greater adherence—making all the difference for those struggling with chronic illness or even those wanting to optimize general health.

In my opinion, the future of medicine—especially when it comes to longevity and chronic illness—depends on understanding how the body detoxifies and how targeted peptide therapies may support healing and repair. At Performance Medicine, my mission is to equip both patients and fellow practitioners with tools and protocols that help get to the root cause, not just cover up symptoms. I encourage you to take a systems approach to your health: support your detox pathways, consider evidence-based peptide therapies when appropriate, and stay open to new science that may help you feel better, function better, and take the next right step in your health.

Stay educated. Stay healthy.

Till next week.
