Welcome to another edition of the Doctor’s Note where we talk about what’s on our minds when it comes to your health.
This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with my good friend Josh Davis, PT, DPT, CSCS, owner of Tri Star Strength x Rehab, at his brand new gym in Kingsport. We dove into the unique approach he’s developed—combining physical therapy and strength training under one roof. Josh shared how his facility isn’t just for elite athletes, but is designed for the everyday person who wants to optimize their health, build muscle, and prevent or recover from injuries. We discussed the importance of setting specific, achievable goals tailored to each individual’s needs—whether you’re focused on aesthetics, functional strength, or pushing your athletic performance.
We also explored how aging adults can use targeted movement and objective metrics to stay strong and vibrant. Josh emphasized his philosophy around “rehab and prehab,” and the need for personalized assessments and programs. The gym isn’t just equipped with the best weights and technology—there’s also a huge focus on making fitness fun, accessible, and relevant for every age and fitness level. From using turf and force plates to testing VO2 max and grip strength, it’s a forward-thinking environment set up to help everyone—from weekend warriors to pro athletes—become stronger than before.
PODCAST NOTES
Tri Star Strength x Rehab’s approach merges physical therapy and strength coaching, allowing members not only to recover from injury but also to address weaknesses, imbalances, and performance limitations under expert guidance. This model gives people a one-stop solution where assessment, rehab, and progression to high-level training are seamless, reflecting the reality that everyone—at any age or ability—can benefit from both therapy and strength work together.
The new Kingsport location marks a significant upgrade in both physical space and available resources. With 6,000 square feet, state-of-the-art turf, an array of squat racks, sleds, and space for dynamic movements like sprints and jumps, the facility is equipped for any fitness need. Whether you’re coming back from an injury, training for college athletics, or just want a supportive environment, this gym provides the tools and atmosphere for lasting progress.
Every individual receives a custom-tailored experience based on comprehensive, science-backed evaluation. Josh uses advanced technology—such as force plates, variable resistance machines, and detailed assessment protocols—to profile each person’s strengths, deficits, and goals. Programs aren’t generic; they’re grounded in the data and adjusted over time for optimal, safe progress.
Tri Star intentionally breaks the mold of the stereotypical physical therapy clinic. There are no sterile environments, no khakis or endless paperwork—just hands-on coaching, teamwork, and a “real gym” atmosphere where clients of all backgrounds rub shoulders with elite athletes. This vibe not only keeps things fun and motivating, but helps foster a community of accountability and growth.
For those of us moving through the later chapters of life, maintaining and even building muscle is crucial—the very currency of healthy aging. Regularly assessing body composition, bone density, and aerobic fitness (with tools like DEXA scans and VO2 max tests) are key elements. The programs offered are designed to boost functional capacity and vitality, not just longevity for its own sake.
Josh and his staff act as partners in total wellness—not just strength trainers, but coaches for every aspect of health, from smart nutrition to sleep, goal planning, and fostering habits that stick. They use evidence-based strategies to keep workouts fun, help you stay accountable, and intervene early when barriers pop up—whether it’s motivation, injury, or life stress.
The facility is intentionally designed to inspire greatness: clients often work out alongside current and former elite athletes, which can be incredibly motivating. Friendly competition, direct access to knowledgeable coaches who “walk the walk,” and tangible progress make it easier for everyone—from teens to retirees—to stay consistent and push their limits.
Looking ahead, Tri Star is expanding what “fitness” means for the community. Programs like their February longevity reset are tailored for all training ages, addressing the diverse needs of beginners, returnees, and long-term athletes alike. There are even plans for inclusive competitions and local events, aiming to make optimal health, performance, and community-driven fun accessible to everyone in the Kingsport area.
I’m deeply impressed by what Josh and his team have built—a truly innovative, supportive, and results-driven environment. Whether you’re looking to rehab an injury, build strength, or age optimally, this gym has the expertise and technology to get you there.
Don’t accept being average—take your health to the next level! If you’re ready to set some goals, find out what you’re truly capable of, and enjoy the process along the way, I encourage you to check out Tri Star Strength x Rehab. See you in the gym!
Stay educated. Stay healthy.
Till next week.
