In this week’s podcast I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Jessica Patrone, a highly innovative doctor of pharmacy, to discuss an often overlooked yet promising approach in cancer treatment: the use of anti-parasitic medications such as ivermectin and mebendazole. Our conversation was sparked by the growing burden of cancer in this country and the urgent need to continue exploring treatments that may be both effective and accessible. Dr. Patrone shared how her work with ivermectin began during the COVID pandemic, when Tennessee helped pave the way for pharmacy-based access under provider oversight. That experience eventually led her into the growing field of repurposed medications and their potential use in cancer and other conditions. Through her compounding pharmacy, she is now able to provide individualized dosing and make these treatment options available to patients nationwide.
We talked about the science behind using ivermectin and mebendazole together, as well as some of the practical considerations for cancer patients. According to Dr. Jessica Patrone, these medications work synergistically: mebendazole interrupts the cancer cell’s structural microtubules, essentially crippling their internal transport highways, while ivermectin interferes with the cells’ ability to replicate and helps keep chemotherapy drugs inside malignant cells by blocking resistance mechanisms. This dual approach—sometimes as an adjunct to traditional chemotherapy, and at other times as a last resort or solo treatment—offers new hope for those facing difficult diagnoses. Importantly, safety remains front and center: Dr. Jessica Patrone emphasized the critical role of proper dosing and sourcing, as well as her commitment to affordable access.

The COVID pandemic brought unexpected clarity to the importance of re-examining old drugs for new uses. Thanks to unique legislation in Tennessee, pharmacies like Dr. Jessica Patrone’s were able to legally dispense ivermectin under collaborative agreements with physicians, ensuring both safety and access. This created a precedent for responsible repurposing under medical oversight, in stark contrast to the public’s dangerous attempts to self-dose with over-the-counter or animal formulations.
The demand for ivermectin and mebendazole exploded during the pandemic, but that momentum carried over into other areas, especially as patients and providers observed potential benefits beyond viral illnesses. Their pharmacy began fielding increasing requests not just for COVID, but also for parasite cleanses, Lyme disease, and—critically—for cancer support. This surge highlighted the public’s hunger for alternative, research-backed options and the need for expert-led dosing guidance as more patients sought these medications for complex or chronic conditions.
Cancer incidence rates are on the rise, with more patients being diagnosed now than ever before—due in part to better detection, but also, possibly, a true increase in prevalence. Dr. Jessica Patrone and I discussed how this flood of new cases is resulting in many people seeking therapies outside of rigid, one-size-fits-all frameworks. People are not only confronting more cancers, but those cancers appear more aggressive and unpredictable, pushing patients and providers alike to search for new, comprehensive therapies.
Fenbendazole, originally popular for its low price and widespread veterinary use, began to lose favor due to concerns about toxicity—especially liver toxicity—when patients tried to self-dose or stack multiple medications. Dr. Jessica Patrone has seen a shift among patients away from fenbendazole towards mebendazole, which has a safer toxicity profile and is approved for human use. Her ability to procure mebendazole in bulk and make it affordable has allowed more patients to access safer therapy without resorting to veterinary drugs.
The combination of ivermectin and mebendazole takes a multi-pronged approach to fighting cancer. Mebendazole disrupts microtubules—the “cargo highways” of the cell—causing breakdown of the internal structures that tumors depend on. Ivermectin works through a different mechanism by arresting cellular replication and interfering with P-glycoprotein pumps that expel drugs from cancer cells, thereby reducing drug resistance. This means the two drugs not only work independently to induce cell death but also can enhance the retention and potency of other chemotherapy drugs.
Ensuring that medications are properly sourced and formulated—particularly in the world of compounding—is critical for patient safety and efficacy. Dr. Jessica Patrone emphasized the need for using the correct crystalline structure (polymorph C) of mebendazole, which makes a significant difference in how well the body can absorb it. Taking mebendazole with a high-fat meal can further boost absorption up to four-fold, allowing for better outcomes at lower, safer doses.
Attitudes among oncologists are beginning to shift. While some are still hesitant, open-minded oncologists are seeing promising results and are reaching out to compounding pharmacists for dosing information on these medications, especially in cases where patients have failed traditional treatments or are seeking additional support. There is an emerging recognition that, particularly in advanced and refractory cancers, incorporating safe, repurposed drugs may offer precious life-extending options when mainstream therapies run out of options.
Compounded medications do not pass through the FDA’s approval process, so patients must rely on trusted compounding pharmacies for proper formulation, dosing, and quality control. Dr. Jessica Patrone underscored that not all sources of compounded drugs are created equal: expertise, pharmaceutical-grade ingredients, and rigorous internal standards are essential to ensure patients receive medications that are both effective and safe for use alongside traditional cancer therapies.
As cancer continues to affect more and more people, we need to stay open to exploring new approaches to treatment while also being careful about the evidence, safety, and proper use of these medications. Repurposed medications like ivermectin and mebendazole are certainly worth learning more about, particularly when they are prescribed and monitored by knowledgeable clinicians who understand appropriate dosing and individualized care.
